To have us prepare your federal and state income tax return, we need three items:
- The information returns that your employer, bank, broker and mortgage company sent. (Basically, anything that came or used to come in an envelope labeled “important tax document.”)
- The completed organizer “checklist” to make sure we get all the other information needed to prepare your return and minimize your federal and state income taxes.
- A signed engagement letter.
We send out an digital copy of the organizer and engagement letter right after the new year starts. (If you want Nelson CPA to prepare your tax return this year and we haven’t worked together before, tell us to put your name on the list.)
Note: You can also download a PDF version of our 2020 tax organizer, 2021 tax organizer, 2022 tax organizer, 2023 tax organizer or 2024 tax organizer. (Most taxpayers use only the first dozen or so pages which collect personal information and provide checklists. You do not need to copy information supplied on some tax form you’ll also supply—such as information from your W-2.)
The easiest and only safe way to provide us with the documents we’ll need (the information returns, the completed organizer, and so on) is via our secure portal. You can also snail mail us your documents.
Caution: We are attacked nearly daily through tax season by cybercriminals attempting to steal client data. For this reason, we do not open email attachments.
We will deliver your tax return electronically via our ShareFile portal. Don’t worry. The portal works very simply.
The IRS and most state tax agencies require we electronically file your income tax returns. Accordingly, we also email you a link to access the online signature form you use to authorize that filing.
